Abstract

The paper is devoted to the Nenets linguist and translator of the 1920s–1930s A.P. Pyrerka (1905– 1941), the first Nenets scholar, writer and translator, little known nowadays. The Nenets language, which was his main research interest, is one of the Samoyedic languages, being widespread in the Russian tundra zone from the Kola Peninsula to the right bank of the Yenisei River. A.P. Pyrerka created the Nenets alphabet and system of writing as well as a number of workbooks for national schools and folklore collections in the Nenets language, such as “Nenets Tales”, “Your Tales” and “The Old Woman’s Only Son”. A.P. Pyrerka’s works in the field of lexicography, reindeer breeding terminology and ethnography have played an important role in the development of culture and science in the Far North.
