Abstract

The paper is a historiographical review of offences by the Orthodox clergy, which, until now, has not been considered as an issue of historical studies. Special attention is given to the reasons of breach of discipline as it has been the object of this research. The author singles out several areas in the study of causes of law offence conducted within the humanities and applied sciences. Due to formal requirements, the paper is confined to domestic historiography. The pre-revolutionary period is represented by the works of historians, lawyers and clergy. The Soviet period is stamped with a one-sided, extremely ideologized approach. Contemporary historical science has seen a revival of interest in this topic, some of its aspects being studied on a local and regional level. The paper is addressed to specialists interested in the history of Russian Orthodox Church, behavioral culture of the clergy and development of relations between the church and the state.
