Abstract

The paper dwells on the works by the modern Kazan writer Adel Khairov. In three of his works – “Kazan–Kurochki”, “One Street for Two” and “Joseph’s Sideboard” – Adel Khairov presents the mythology of the Kazan text in Russian culture (by mythology of local texts the author means replicating signatures of the city by all those who write about Kazan) as well as foreign ethnocultural component of Russian literature: Tatar glosses and linguistic interference; author’s punning etymology of Tatar place names; and the influence of Russian culture on the Tatar culture – as a result of colonial processes in the Russian Empire. In addition, the paper analyzes Orientalist and Post-Orientalist intentions in Khairov’s prose and compares Venedikt Erofeev’s poem “Moscow – Petushki” with Khairov’s “Kazan – Kurochki”. Adel Khairov creates a picture of the world of the bilingual and bicultural environment and becomes
a mediator between different mentalities and ethnic values.
