Abstract

The paper analyzes publications of the pre-scientific period (1910s) on Komi folklore, which along with passing remarks about beliefs represent actual folklore as well. These are both retellings and authentic texts – in the original and with translation. The paper introduces little-studied and nonrepublished materials (since their publication), some of which meet the requirements for sources imposed by modern criticism. They can be evaluated using the selection methods and techniques applied by folklore historians. First of all we should name T.G. Ivanova and A.L. Toporkov with their “Folklorist’s Bibliographical Dictionary”. Of particular interest to modern folklorists are P.A. Sorokin’s articles. He not only retells various mythological stories and fairy tales, describes Zyrian rituals and beliefs, but also cites pieces of oral poetry and its fragments. The results of the research contribute to the history of the Komi people folklore studies, especially in terms of lesser-known names in the modern study of folklore.
