Abstract

The article touches upon the process of regional integration in the European North in the historical retrospective review. The Northern European integration is represented by such organizations as the Nordic Council, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the Barents Euro- Arctic Region and the Arctic Council. Thеsе organizations have already proved efficient in developing cooperation both in the north of Europe and within the European Union as a whole. The EU’s northward expansion and closer integration between the EU, Northern Europe and Russia paved the way for a special Northern European policy within the framework of the EU. Northern cooperation made it possible for the countries to compensate for the disadvantages of being on the periphery and to defend their own interests in the united Europe. The system of regional organizations in the north of Europe also has a tendency to pursue its own independent policy while preserving the sovereignty, economic independence and cultural identity of these countries in the framework of European cooperation.
