Abstract

The article dwells on the topical and debatable issue in the modern foreign and domestic historiography: legitimacy of applying the term “empire” to Soviet Russia. This issue is analyzed within the context of state policy in the field of nation-building and interaction between the centre and the hinterland regions of the country. On the basis of the analysis of modern historiography, the author offers her vision of this problem. The results of this research have both theoretical and practical importance. They are directed at harmonization of international relations and strengthening of the commonwealth of nations in modern Russia.
