Abstract

Based on the analysis of a wide variety of sources, archival and historical-ethnographic materials, the paper dwells on the administration of a large and influential feudal state in Dagestan: Shamkhalate of Tarki in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author believes that the political situation in the shamkhalate during this period was rather unstable. The shamkhals’ power was restricted by the arbitrary rule of omnipotent princes – beys. The absence of vassalage was a distinguished feature of the administrative-political structure of the Shamkhalate of Tarki.
